She sleeps beside me,
her steady breathing
a sweet melody
I could listen to
for an eternity.
Red curls stream
across her pillow,
silky soft,
smelling of nighttime
and stars.
I slide my arms around her.
She shifts to accept my embrace.
I close my eyes,
but sleep won't come.
It hasn't visited me
in centuries.
We are strangers,
sleep and I.
In my solitude,
I never minded,
but now I wish
to dream with her,
to travel weightless
in the blurred edges.
She smiles in her sleep,
but I do not know
if she smiles for me.
I am here.
She is elsewhere.
For now I watch,
I wonder,
I hope.
